Overview

Feet, inches, and fractional measurements are part of everyday work for contractors, carpenters, installers, woodworkers, engineers, and many other service professionals. Unfortunately, most calculator apps are designed around decimal values rather than the way these measurements are actually written and used in the field.

CalcFlex began with a client observation: calculating with imperial measurements should not require repeatedly converting values to another format first.

RocIT turned that recurring frustration into a focused mobile product for iOS and Android.

The Challenge

A measurement such as 5' 6 7/8" is easy for a person to understand, but awkward to enter into a traditional calculator. Users often need to convert the feet, inches, and fraction into a decimal, perform the calculation, and then convert the answer back into a usable measurement.

That workflow creates unnecessary friction and introduces opportunities for errors, particularly when calculations are being performed repeatedly or in a busy work environment.

The application needed to:

  • Accept feet, inches, and fractional measurements naturally
  • Produce accurate, readable results
  • Support both everyday arithmetic and advanced calculations
  • Convert seamlessly between imperial measurements and decimal values
  • Keep previous calculations accessible
  • Remain easy to understand without sacrificing flexibility

The Solution

CalcFlex provides a calculator experience designed specifically around feet, inches, fractions, and decimal measurements.

The interface supports addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division alongside scientific functions such as trigonometry, roots, and exponents. Users can move between measurement and decimal views without manually rebuilding their calculations.

Key Features

  • Smart imperial-unit parsing
  • Feet, inches, and fraction calculations
  • Automatic measurement and decimal conversion
  • Fraction precision configurable up to 1/64 inch
  • Basic and scientific calculator functions
  • Degree and radian calculation modes
  • Reusable, categorized calculation history
  • Custom button styles and colors
  • Ready-made visual theme presets
  • Built-in instructional video

User-focused Design

Users can select a preset theme or customize the background, number buttons, top buttons, and operation buttons individually. This flexibility allows the calculator to feel personal without interfering with its primary job.

The calculation history is tappable, allowing past work to be found and reused instead of entered again.
